Here is a quick fix for laptop with combined mic/headphone 3.5mm and Realtek audio driver. I'm not sure if this fix work on all laptop, but I can confirm that this method works on my asus laptop.
- Start by opening the control panel and click on "Realtek Audio Manager"
- Next click the folder icon on top right of Realtek Audio Manager
- Make sure "Enables the popup dialog box if the device is inserted" is check
- Plug in your simulator cable in the laptop audio imput and select "Microphone input"
Now SmartPropoPlus should recognize the simulator cable and work properly
